Summary

National Highways is commissioning research to review and modernise key road design standards (DMRB CD127, CD109, CD116) for the UK strategic road network. The work will examine whether motorways can safely accommodate additional lanes, evaluate alternative road layouts (2+1, 2+2 configurations), assess current design rules for speed and visibility, and review junction design standards. The goal is to identify opportunities to improve safety, increase capacity, reduce costs, and eliminate gaps in current standards that may limit scheme deliverability.
