Summary

The Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is seeking services to implement phytoremediation at the Eureka High Arctic Weather Station (HAWS) on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. The project aims to remediate soil areas impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) that cannot be excavated due to proximity to infrastructure and embankment stability concerns. Phytoremediation offers a low-carbon, green alternative to conventional heavy machinery-based remediation, with minimal operational and maintenance requirements. The approach will be enhanced with Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) seed treatments to improve plant establishment and acceleration in the high Arctic's challenging environment.

Description

The Eureka High Arctic Weather Station (HAWS) is situated in an isolated location on the north side of Slidre Fjord at the northwestern tip of Fosheim Peninsula, Ellesmere Island at approximately 80° N. The facility occupies a federal Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) land reserve, #1021, spanning an area of 2.23 ha.
